The function of a piston ring

The function of a piston ring is to seal off the combustion pressure, distribute and control the lubricating oil, carry heat away, and support the piston. The piston ring is one of the most complicated tribological components in the internal combustion engine due to the complicated operation conditions such as large variations of load, speed, temperature, and lubricant availability. A ring pack is usually consisting of 2–5 piston rings. Depending on the type of engine, the ring pack may have 2–4 compression rings and 0–3 oil control rings, as illustrated in photo.
